PREGNANCY TIMELINE: WEEK 8

Week eight marks the end of the embryonic period. Your baby is about the size of a bean and a number of changes are taking place. By the end of the eighth week, the fingers have lengthened and the toes are distinct. However, the head is still disproportionately large, almost half of the embryo. The eyes are usually open at this stage, but toward the end of the week the eyelids may begin to meet and fuse. The outside part of the ears begin to assume their final shape. At this point, the external genitalia are not distinct enough to determine the baby's sex. It will be a few more weeks before you can decide if the nursery will be pink or blue!

Your uterus has doubled in size since before pregnancy. You may feel cramping or pain in your sides or lower abdomen as the uterus contracts. While you are not showing, prenatal workouts will prepare your body for the weight of the growing baby and help condition muscles to better respond to cramping and post-partum recovery. Start a prenatal workout if you haven't done so already.
